Melvin P. Moy is a creative writer, producer, vocalist, performing artist, Motown alumnus, Vietnam veteran, and author with more than thirty years of writing experience.
Music entered his life through family. His mother and grandmother helped establish the musical foundation, while his sister Sylvia became his mentor and guide into Motown's creative world. There, melody, discipline, humor, and collaboration were part of everyday life.
Melvin's story is not a straight line. A military draft interrupted a possible recording career just as a major opportunity appeared. What followed was service, separation, return, and a creative life that continued across records, jingles, publishing, screenwriting, performance, and books.
A Journey Through Music
Studio A left an imprint
As a teenager, Melvin followed Sylvia into the Motown orbit. He remembers the people, laughter, conversations, and unfinished instrumental tracks moving through Studio A before they became records known around the world.
Those rooms made creativity feel both extraordinary and practical: writers writing, musicians playing, producers listening, and a Detroit company turning ideas into a global sound.

1965
An opportunity, then a draft notice
Sylvia arranged an audition connected to the Temptations. Before it could happen, Melvin was ordered to report for induction into the United States Army.
1966
Motown reaches Vietnam
While serving overseas, Melvin received shipments of newly released Motown albums. The music brought energy, connection, and a powerful reminder of home to soldiers around him.
1967
Return to Detroit
Homecoming meant readjustment, family, and a renewed path into songwriting, production, and the business of music.
Beyond
Records, words, and legacy
Melvin continued with record releases, commercial music, publishing, screenplay work, public appearances, and the book that connects the full journey.
Mentor & Sister
Sylvia Rose Moy
Sylvia Moy began as a singer and became a pioneering Motown songwriter and producer. Her creative resolve helped guide Stevie Wonder through a changing voice and into a remarkable run of songs, while her collaborations reached Marvin Gaye, Kim Weston, the Isley Brothers, and other Motown artists.
To Melvin, she was also the big sister who opened doors, gave honest direction, and modeled what disciplined creative work could accomplish.
Melvin dedicated Motown & Vietnam to her memory.
