Melvin was a young songwriter with a direct connection to Motown when he entered the Army. During his service in Vietnam, shipments of new Motown albums arrived from Detroit. The records offered more than entertainment; they carried familiarity, identity, and a shared emotional language.
The book follows the longer journey that brought him there and the creative life that continued after his return.
How the Book Began
A conversation at the Motown Museum
During a visit to the Motown Museum in the 1990s, Melvin spoke with founder Esther Gordy Edwards about receiving new Motown albums while serving in Vietnam and about the music's effect on the soldiers around him.
Her encouragement to write the story became the spark for this book. What began as an account of music at war grew into a wider journey through songwriting, manhood, family, Detroit, and the Motown family.
The story had to begin before Vietnam, with the journey that led to music, service, and Motown.
